Kafountine : Les femmes réclament plus de place dans la gouvernance locale

The women of the Kafountine commune made a strong plea for greater involvement in the management of public affairs. This took place during a forum organized by the Network of Active Women of Kafountine (REFAK).

Created in 2022, this citizen mobilization framework now brings together 63 economic interest groups (EIGs) and is establishing itself as a model of inclusive local governance.

An essential role, but underrepresented

In Kafountine, persistent and significant obstacles are hindering the dynamism of women, who constitute the economic strength of this coastal area, according to the president of REFAK. "The women of Kafountine are the driving force of our local economy. They process, market, educate, and organize families. Yet, they continue to face major obstacles: limited access to financing, weak representation in decision-making bodies, and insufficient training," explained Niara Diabang.

Kafountine, an economic hub in the making

The mayor took advantage of the meeting to highlight the strategic potential of his municipality. "Kafountine is now an emerging economic hub. Its geostrategic position gives it a major role in the development of the Ziguinchor region."

David Diatta reiterated the national authorities' desire to make Casamance an economic capital of Senegal.

The State is banking on empowerment

The Minister of Family and Solidarity, Maïmouna Dièye, praised the financial discipline of the women in the network, emphasizing the State's commitment to supporting women. "The funding provided is not social assistance, but a strategic investment. You have proven your reliability by repaying nearly two million in loans in one year. You are an example to be replicated in all departments."

She announced two priority areas: training and increased access to financing to transform GIEs into formal businesses.

Towards a strong endogenous economy

This forum illustrates the desire to build an endogenous and inclusive economy, based on resilience and community organization. "We are committed to making you the guardians of economic development in Casamance and Senegal," the minister concluded.
