Kharakhéna : un éboulement dans une zone interdite d’orpaillage fait un mort et un blessé
A tragedy occurred on Tuesday, March 31st in Kharakhéna, in the Kédougou region. A landslide in an area formally prohibited to artisanal gold mining, located within the Afrigold perimeter, caused the death of a young gold miner and left one person slightly injured.
The victim, identified by the initials SD, was a 26-year-old Malian national who lived in the area where he worked as a gold panner. According to information gathered at the scene, the young man was at the bottom of a pit with his brother, both of them searching for gold using a detector.
After several hours underground, the two men reportedly decided to temporarily interrupt their activity. It was at that precise moment that the sand suddenly collapsed, burying them under a compact mass.
Alerted immediately, members of the Saraya gendarmerie brigade went to the scene to carry out the usual procedures and coordinate rescue operations. Unfortunately, the young gold miner did not survive the landslide.
His body was taken to the regional hospital in Kédougou, while his brother, who was slightly injured, was evacuated to Mali to receive appropriate care.
This latest accident highlights the ongoing dangers of illegal gold mining in prohibited areas. Despite existing restrictions, many gold panners continue to venture there, often risking their lives, in the hope of finding the precious metal.
