Lutte contre l’orpaillage clandestin : 19 dragues démantelées sur la Falémé par le GARSI 2
Operations to combat illegal gold mining continue in eastern Senegal. On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, elements of the GARSI 2 Support Point based in Saeinsoutou conducted another large-scale operation along the Falémé River, in the department of Saraya.
The operation targeted several illegal gold mining sites located near the villages of Wortokhati and Toumbingfara, in the commune of Missira Sirimana. It is part of the actions undertaken by the defense and security forces to put an end to illegal activities that affect the environment and threaten the natural resources of the area.
According to information gathered, forces deployed on the ground neutralized 19 dredges used in illegal gold mining. These dredges, often installed on waterways, are regularly criticized for their negative impacts on ecosystems, including water pollution and riverbank erosion.
No arrests were made during this operation, as the operators had presumably left the premises before the arrival of the security forces.
Authorities also emphasize that the operation proceeded without major incident. No injuries or collateral damage were reported during the intervention.
This new seizure demonstrates the determination of the security forces to enforce the ban on illegal gold mining along the Falémé, a river whose ecological balance is severely threatened by the uncontrolled use of dredges and other unregulated mining techniques.
As dismantling operations increase in this part of the country, the national gendarmerie reaffirms its commitment to continue the hunt for clandestine mining networks in order to preserve the environment and ensure sustainable management of mineral resources.
