Lynchage numérique après la Tabaski : Deux grands imams de Thiès ciblés, un marabout réplique
Religious leaders in Senegal, particularly imams, are increasingly being subjected to online attacks following their Tabaski and Korité sermons. This year, in Thiès, after the two-rak'ah prayer of Eid al-Adha, two highly respected figures of the Ummah, the Imam Ratib of the Grand Mosque of Moussanté, Tafsir Babacar Ndiour, and the Khalif of the late Samba Moukhine Diallo, were targeted by a wave of online criticism.
They faced attacks for addressing current events in their sermons, as is the case for almost all imams in the country. Imam Babacar Ndiour, in particular, mentioned Article 132 concerning the presidency of the National Assembly. This statement was misinterpreted and amplified by hostile reactions on social media. As for the Khalif of the late Sheikh Samba Moukhine Diallo, he denounced "institutional abuses" and the high cost of living, which earned him online invective and insults.
The response was swift from Oustaz Oumar Dème, a marabout-politician in Thiès, who resolved to defend the two targeted imams and offer them his support. According to Oustaz Dème, "the country is headed for disaster if religious leaders, who have always preached in the public interest, are marginalized, insulted, and lynched." He continued, "These religious figures have done nothing more than address everyday realities, and therefore social issues, in their sermons."
The marabout-politician, who insists on the need to preserve the moral authority of spiritual leaders, essential for stability and national unity, recalls "the respect due to religious leaders who have often sacrificed their lives for the stability of the country, like emblematic figures such as Cheikh Oumar Foutiyou Tall, El-Hadji Malick Sy, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, Mame Limamoulaye, Mame Amary Ndack Seck, and Mame Baye Niass, among others." He also called on the authorities to put an end to these attacks.
