On Saturday, February 7th, a particularly violent accident that claimed the life of a fifth-grade student sparked outrage among the residents of Maléme Niani, a town located 25 kilometers from Koumpentoum in the Tambacounda region. They protested, demanding the construction of speed bumps for their safety.
According to witnesses, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a 4x4 vehicle traveling from Dakar struck the young fifth-grade student on National Route 1. The victim died instantly due to the force of the impact. The driver was arrested and taken into custody by the Koumpentoum gendarmerie. The girl's body was transported to the morgue by firefighters.
The tragedy sparked outrage among the local population, who, in a fit of anger, burned and destroyed everything in their path. It took the intervention of ESI students to calm the situation. The residents demonstrated to say no to the "numerous road accidents that claim the lives of loved ones." They are demanding the immediate installation of speed bumps.
