Marche du 8 avril : le Front pour la défense de la République apporte son soutien au front syndical
On Monday, April 6, the Front for the Defense of the Republic (FDR) published a statement expressing its solidarity with the Trade Union Front for the Defense of Labor (FSDT), which is organizing a national march on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
This nationwide demonstration aims to protest what it considers a breach of the National Social Stability Pact (PNSS), a tripartite agreement signed between the government, unions, and employers. Workers also intend to denounce the high cost of living, the collapse of purchasing power, and government inaction in the face of these problems. A notice of a general strike has also been filed.
“This demonstration of workers’ anger will take place in a context marked by an unprecedented financial crisis, attributable to the populism and incompetence of the Pastef regime, which has led to a loss of confidence among investors and economic and financial partners. It also comes in a climate of economic stagnation with dramatic social consequences, characterized by rising unemployment and a decline in non-hydrocarbon economic growth in 2025, as well as the crisis in the construction and public works sector and the rural world,” the members of the FDR stated.
Even worse, they painted a bleak picture of the country's economic situation. He cited figures from the ANSD showing an unemployment rate of 24% in urban areas and 30% in rural areas.
The FDR also takes a stand against the Prime Minister's statements of April 3, 2026, which it describes as "austerity threats", and calls for the safeguarding of social gains as well as the protection of Senegalese companies.
The FDR urges all political, social, and democratic forces in the country to unite their struggles. The movement calls for active support of the FSDT march and for building what it describes as "a bulwark against the excesses of the Pastef regime."
