« Mayma ma niam » : Comment un laveur de véhicules a volé une moto
The Thiès court heard a motorcycle theft case on Monday involving car washer A. Sy. The defendant is being prosecuted for stealing a TVS brand motorcycle belonging to S. Diallo, following a scheme that was as simple as it was effective.
According to the facts presented in court, A. Sy approached the owner's son and asked him to "test" the motorcycle, using the Wolof expression "Mayma ma niam," commonly used to request a short test ride. Feeling reassured, the young man handed over the motorcycle. A. Sy then took advantage of the situation and disappeared with it.
The owner's search yielded nothing. It was later established that the accused had traveled to Tivaouane with the motorcycle. A significant detail in the case: it was the accused's mother who, upon discovering his return without the motorcycle, turned him in to the police. A. Sy was subsequently remanded in custody.
In court, the defendant admitted to the facts, explaining that he had entrusted the motorcycle to a friend, who then allegedly took it away. This explanation failed to convince the court.
The plaintiff, S. Diallo, assessed the damages at 830,000 CFA francs, corresponding to the value of the motorcycle. In a gesture of appeasement, however, he declared that he forgave the defendant.
Despite everything, the public prosecutor requested a one-month prison sentence. The court followed this recommendation, finding A. Sy guilty of theft. He was sentenced to one month in prison and fined 50,000 CFA francs.
