Mbao : importante saisie de juvéniles de poissons effectuée par l'Aire Marine Protégée
In Mbao, a joint surveillance operation on Thursday, March 19, 2026, resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of juvenile fish, highlighting the persistence of illegal fishing practices on the Senegalese coast.
The intervention was carried out by the Gorée Marine Protected Area, in collaboration with the Regional Fisheries Service, as part of its missions to monitor and protect fisheries resources. These actions are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at preserving marine ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of the fishing sector, which is heavily dependent on stock replenishment.
On the ground, officers observed the presence of undersized fish, a serious violation of current regulations. The capture and sale of these juveniles jeopardizes the renewal of species and threatens the balance of marine food chains.
Alerted, the relevant administrative authorities, including the Directorate of Community Marine Protected Areas and the Directorate of Maritime Fisheries, went to the site to assess the situation. This visit allowed them to evaluate the scale of the seizure and to initiate the first measures.
According to the Ministry of the Environment and Ecological Transition, administrative and judicial procedures have been initiated against the people involved, in accordance with regulatory texts.
The authorities reaffirm their firm stance against these practices and remind everyone that protecting marine resources is a collective responsibility. They therefore call on fishermen, fishmongers, and other stakeholders in the sector to strictly adhere to regulations.
