Mbour : la femme enceinte, les 5 millions F CFA et les visas pour…
Seven months pregnant, O. Diallo is in prison. This mother, detained at the Mbour Detention and Correction Center (MAC), is accused of shattering the dreams of two would-be immigrants by promising them visas to the United States and Canada. L'Observateur, which attended the hearing, estimates the damages at 5 million CFA francs.
It all began last December when the defendant managed to convince Mr. Diop and Mr. A. Dione that she could obtain travel documents for them to the West for a fee of 4 million per person. Trusting her completely, the victims paid a total deposit of 5 million, including 2 million for the American project and 3 million for the Canadian project.
However, the disappointment was brutal: while the departure was initially scheduled for January 31st, the visas were never issued. The investigation revealed that the funds received had allegedly been used by the woman for personal purposes, without the knowledge of her husband, an emigrant living in Spain.
During her hearing, O. Diallo admitted to the facts while attempting to minimize her responsibility. She claimed, in particular, to have been merely an intermediary for a certain "Mr. Thiam," who is now nowhere to be found. She maintained that she had received only a commission of 200,000 FCFA per case, a line of defense that convinced neither the judge nor the prosecutor. The prosecutor, in fact, requested the strict application of the law.
For their part, the plaintiffs are demanding full reimbursement of their money. The court has taken the case under advisement, and the verdict is expected on Tuesday, April 7, concludes the newspaper of the Future Media Group.
