Mbour : Un bébé de 6 mois et une fillette de 11 ans parmi les 34 migrants interceptés par la police

The investigation unit of the Diamaguène 2 police station in Mbour thwarted an attempt at illegal migration by intercepting 34 individuals at Grand-Mbour beach. Among them were women, an infant, and a young girl, all driven by the same dream: to reach Spain.

On April 22, 2026, officers from the aforementioned BR (Brigade de Recherches - Research Brigade) were informed of a likely departure of undocumented migrants from Grand-Mbour beach. They then went to the location and apprehended 34 individuals. Among those arrested were 20 women, a 6-month-old baby, and an 11-year-old girl. According to Seneweb sources, the group consisted of 14 Gambians, seven Malians, eight Senegalese, three Guineans, and two Ivorians.

The organizer of the trip was not found at the scene and the captains of the makeshift boat managed to escape before the police arrived.

Three days at sea, a pirogue in distress

According to information gathered on site, the migrants had departed from The Gambia and drifted for three days before reaching Mbour. During the journey, the pirogue reportedly began taking on water, making it impossible to continue. Faced with the danger, the migrants allegedly asked the captain to turn back, which he did before fleeing when the police arrived.

When questioned about their reasons for being in Mbour, the migrants unanimously stated that they wanted to reach Spain to earn a living. This statement illustrates once again the distress and determination of these men, women, and children, ready to brave all dangers to try to reach Europe.

Upon being informed, Prosecutor Augustin Yakhar Faye, head of the public prosecutor's office at the Mbour High Court, instructed investigators to interview all those attempting to migrate. An investigation has been launched to determine responsibility and identify the organizer of this clandestine journey, which is still ongoing.
