Migration irrégulière et traite des personnes : 2 757 migrants interpellés et 49 cas de traite recensés en 2025
The fight against irregular migration and human trafficking remains a security priority in Senegal. The 2025 report from the National Gendarmerie highlights that the phenomenon is characterized by significant transnational mobility and the involvement of organized criminal networks. According to the Head of the Gendarmerie's Operations and Intelligence Center, Lieutenant Abdoulaye Camara, "during 2025, 1,928 migrants attempted to reach Spain clandestinely aboard 15 boats. In response to this situation, the National Gendarmerie units intensified their surveillance and intervention operations, thwarting 44 departure attempts and apprehending 2,757 migrants." Among those apprehended, "1,254 are Senegalese nationals while 1,503 are foreign nationals, confirming the transnational and complex nature of irregular migration affecting the country."
The operations carried out on the ground also led to the arrest of 72 smugglers and the seizure of 23 boats used for clandestine crossings. The Thiès area stood out in particular, with 24 attempted departures thwarted, illustrating the strategic role of this region in maritime migration routes,” he noted.
Alongside irregular migration, human trafficking is another worrying form of crime. "In 2025, 49 cases were recorded, compared to 30 in 2024, representing a 40% increase. This rise is mainly due to the strengthening of control mechanisms and the improvement of operational intelligence," explains Lieutenant Camara.
Data analysis reveals that the victims are predominantly foreign women, often exploited in the gold mining areas of eastern Senegal. These areas, characterized by significant artisanal mining activity and the presence of migrant workers, provide fertile ground for networks of sexual and economic exploitation.
Faced with these challenges, the National Gendarmerie is pursuing a strategy combining coastal surveillance, dismantling of criminal networks, inter-service cooperation and awareness campaigns among populations exposed to the risks of illegal migration.
Security authorities stress that combating these phenomena also requires strengthened international cooperation, given the regional and cross-border dimension of the networks involved.
