« Occupez-vous de vos...» : le cri du cœur de la fille de Ousmane Sow
The Museum of Black Civilizations (MCN) in Dakar is hosting a three-year exhibition dedicated to the sculptor Ousmane Sow, entitled "Timeless Ousmane Sow," celebrating the richness of his work and his contribution to African art. The opening, however, was marked by a poignant speech from his daughter, Marie Sow, who addressed the authorities about the precarious situation of artists in Senegal, reports Le Quotidien.
A heritage saved from the land "binge"
Quoted by the same source, she first revealed the difficulties that led to the organization of this exhibition. According to her, the Ousmane Sow House, which was responsible for preserving the artist's legacy in Dakar, was forced to close last November due to intense land pressure, described as "a frenzy." This situation posed a real risk of the works leaving the country before an agreement was reached with the MCN (Movement for National Culture) for their preservation in Dakar.
Marie Sow's plea: "Take care of your artists"
In her address, Marie Sow appealed to the authorities: “Take care of your artists.” She emphasized that her plea concerned not only her family, but all Senegalese artists, who often lack the resources and institutional support to preserve their work. She also reiterated that protecting artists and improving their living conditions is the responsibility of the State, designating the President of the Republic as the “guarantor of the arts.”
The government's response
In response, as reported by the Avenir Communication group's daily newspaper, the Minister of Culture, Amadou Bâ, welcomed this challenge, stating that it "reinforces our belief that culture must undergo a radical transformation." The ministry reaffirmed the government's commitment to moving beyond the view of culture as a mere "diplomatic showcase" and transforming it into a genuine driver of development, enabling artists to earn a decent living from their work and ensuring its transmission.
