Parc national du Niokolo-Koba : Validation stratégique du nouveau Plan d’aménagement et de gestion 2026-2035

A decisive step has just been taken in the governance of protected areas in Senegal. The internal validation workshop for the new Management Plan (PAG 2026-2035) of the Niokolo-Koba National Park (PNNK) was successfully held, paving the way for a new dynamic of conservation and sustainable development for the next decade.

A multi-sectoral mobilization around a national issue

This strategic meeting brought together a wide range of stakeholders committed to preserving natural heritage: academics, researchers, state technical services, technical and financial partners, environmental experts, and national park technicians.

The objective was clear: to revisit, consolidate and validate the main directions of the future PAG in order to provide the park with a solid, operational reference framework adapted to contemporary challenges.

Three major priorities for the period 2026-2035

At the heart of the discussions, three strategic axes structured the work: the review and validation of strategic orientations to guide the management of the park over the next ten years; the alignment of conservation actions with the sustainable socio-economic needs of communities living on the periphery of the park; the strengthening of synergy between actors, in order to ensure concerted, coherent and effective management of this exceptional ecosystem.

This integrated approach aims to reconcile two major imperatives: the protection of the remarkable biodiversity of Niokolo-Koba and the improvement of the living conditions of the riverside populations.

A turning point for conservation and local development

The finalization of this strategic document marks a turning point in the management of the PNNK. Classified as a natural heritage site of international importance, the park constitutes one of the main strongholds of West African fauna and flora.

Through this new plan, the authorities and their partners aim to strengthen monitoring, improve conservation mechanisms and promote income-generating initiatives compatible with the preservation of natural resources.

Workshop participants praised the quality of the contributions and the spirit of collaboration that prevailed throughout the proceedings. The 2026-2035 Management Plan (PAG) is thus intended to be an inclusive, pragmatic, and action-oriented tool for the sustainable and responsible management of Niokolo-Koba National Park.

With this strategic validation, Senegal reaffirms its commitment to making its protected areas spaces that are both preserved, enhanced and conducive to sustainable development.
