Rapport ITIE 2024 : Les chiffres vertigineux de l'exploitation minière à Kédougou révélés

In the heart of southeastern Senegal, the Kédougou region confirms its status as a pillar of the national extractive sector. The latest data from the EITI 2024 Report, presented at a regional meeting, reveals a major economic contribution from mining companies operating in the area. But behind these impressive financial results, the question of the real impact on local populations remains entirely open.

According to official figures, over 175 billion FCFA was generated by extractive activities in the region, representing nearly 40% of the sector's national revenue. This performance reflects an upward trend, further solidifying Kédougou's strategic role in the country's mining economy.

This dynamic is primarily driven by the large companies involved in gold mining. Their economic weight, combined with that of other operators, contributes not only to the region's attractiveness but also to public finances. In this respect, Kédougou's direct contribution to the state budget is estimated at over 169 billion CFA francs.

The meeting, which brought together administrative authorities, local elected officials, and stakeholders in the sector, provided a mixed picture. While economic indicators are positive, social realities remain a cause for concern. Several speakers highlighted the persistent gap between the wealth of the subsoil and the living conditions of local populations.

The challenges are numerous: environmental degradation, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to employment for young people and women. These issues fuel a fundamental debate on the management and redistribution of natural resources.

In light of these findings, the participants called for a paradigm shift. They argued that the urgent need is to transform mining revenue into a driver of sustainable development. This requires, in particular, the promotion of local value chains, the strengthening of youth employability, and greater inclusion of women in economic activities related to the sector.

Despite significant progress in transparency and governance—recognized by a very satisfactory assessment under the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI)—efforts must continue. The challenge is now clear: to make Kédougou's natural resources a true engine of inclusive development, capable of sustainably benefiting all its people.

CQFD
