Renforcement des alertes météorologiques au Sénégal : Un nouveau radar installé à Saint-Louis

Senegal is taking a new step in strengthening its weather forecasting capabilities. Following the installation of an X-band radar in Diamniadio in September 2024, a second system, this time in C-band, has just been put into service in Saint-Louis, at the Ousmane Masseck Ndiaye International Airport. The information was provided by the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM).

This new equipment, the result of a partnership between ANACIM and BP Senegal Investments Limited, aims to improve the monitoring of meteorological phenomena in the northern region of the country. The installation was carried out by Meteopress, following a thorough survey conducted with ANACIM experts.

Multiple objectives: security, data and cooperation

The radar will enable real-time detection of precipitation and storm systems, facilitating the dissemination of early warnings to protect populations and their property. For BP Senegal, which is developing a gas field on the maritime border between Senegal and Mauritania, this investment also meets an operational need: having reliable meteorological data to secure its operations.

A memorandum of understanding signed between the two parties provides not only for the shared use of data, but also for technical support for monitoring and maintaining the radar. This model of public-private cooperation illustrates a shared desire to strengthen climate resilience and infrastructure security in high-risk areas.

With this second radar, Senegal is acquiring a denser network for sky surveillance, essential in a context of climate change and an increase in extreme events. This initiative is a continuation of the Integrated Flood Management Project in Senegal (PGIIS) and echoes other strategic collaborations, such as the one that led to the approval of the GTA HUB helideck.

The Senegalese sky, now better scrutinized, is becoming a field of technological cooperation in the service of security and sustainable development.
