Risque de débordement des fleuves Gambie et Sénégal : Kedougou, Matam et Bakel au bord du seuil critique

The Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation issued a warning this Friday about the hydrological situation of the Gambia and Senegal Rivers, based on data from hydrometric stations as of August 15, 2025. A sudden rise in water levels has been observed: in Kédougou (Gambia River), the level rose from 3.95 m on Thursday to 6.40 m today at 4 p.m. (an increase of 2.5 m in 24 hours), with an alert level of 7 m. On the Senegal River, levels are rising moderately, rising from 8.09 m to 8.29 m in Bakel (alert level 10 m) and from 6.43 m to 6.77 m in Matam (alert level 8 m). If the current rains persist, the critical threshold could be reached soon in Kédougou, then in Matam and Bakel, leading to overflows in low-lying areas. The ministry calls on local populations and economic actors to exercise maximum vigilance and take preventive measures, while the State will mobilize its resources to manage the situation.
