Saint-Louis : la Marine nationale porte secours à 429 candidats à l’émigration irrégulière
The Senegalese Navy rescued two pirogues carrying 429 people attempting irregular migration off the coast of Saint-Louis on Friday, May 22, 2026.

The operation took place on the high seas, where naval units intercepted the two boats before escorting them to the Admiral Faye Naval Base. The migrants were then safely disembarked and handed over to the appropriate authorities for identification and processing.
This naval intervention comes amid a surge in clandestine departures from the Senegalese coast. Despite awareness campaigns and increased surveillance, many migrants continue to attempt the crossing to Europe in makeshift boats, exposing themselves to grave dangers at sea.
Senegalese authorities are thus increasing maritime surveillance operations in order to combat irregular migration and prevent the human tragedies often linked to these clandestine crossings.
