Saint-Louis : une pirogue avec plus de 150 migrants échoue au large, 85 interpellés dont des mineurs gambiens, 5 hospitalisés en urgence
A pirogue carrying more than 150 people attempting irregular migration ran aground this Saturday morning off the coast of Saint-Louis while trying to reach the Canary Islands. The operation mobilized the National Division for Combating Migrant Smuggling and Related Practices (DNLT), reinforced by officers from the Saint-Louis central police station.
A pirogue that left Gambia five days ago
Around 6:00 a.m., the boat was spotted off the coast of Guet Ndar beach. During their interviews, the migrants unanimously stated that the pirogue had departed from Gambian territory on Sunday, May 11, 2026, five days before it ran aground. Upon reaching the Mauritanian coast, one of the outboard motors broke down, forcing the boat to turn back towards Senegal.
Upon arriving in Saint-Louis, the drivers transferred the migrants into small canoes before departing for an unknown destination aboard the main vessel they were attempting to use to reach Spain. The smugglers then fled, abandoning the migrants to their fate.
85 people arrested, 5 hospitalized in emergency
The police operation at Guet Ndar beach resulted in the arrest of 85 individuals of various nationalities: 9 Senegalese, 38 Gambians (including 5 minors), 25 Malians, 6 Ivorians, 1 Gabonese, and 1 Congolese. Due to their concerning health condition, 5 people were urgently evacuated to the Saint-Louis Regional Hospital, according to Seneweb sources.
The investigation launched by the DNLT is ongoing to identify and apprehend the smugglers who fled after the transfer. The prosecutor in Saint-Louis has been informed of the facts.
