Fishermen in St. Louis can finally breathe a sigh of relief. A long-standing demand has been met with the completion of an artificial reef off the city's coast. The announcement was made by BP, in partnership with Kosmos Energy and PETROSEN, in an official statement.
Located approximately 4 km off the coast of Saint-Louis, this project represents an estimated investment of 3.2 billion CFA francs. The reef consists of ten sets of innovative structures, designed in the form of cubes and pyramids, intended to promote the regeneration of marine ecosystems.
According to the project's promoters, this artificial reef was designed to last over 99 years. Its main objective is to enhance marine biodiversity while supporting sustainable fishing practices. Ultimately, it should contribute to the preservation of fish stocks and the economic vitality of the Saint-Louis coastal ecosystem.
BP and its partners also emphasize the inclusive approach adopted in carrying out the project. Close collaboration was conducted with artisanal fishers, local authorities, and marine research associations to ensure that the design and location of the reef meet the needs of local communities, international standards, and ecological priorities.
In a context marked by gas exploitation off the coast of Saint-Louis, this artificial reef appears as a strong signal in favor of environmental protection and the preservation of the livelihoods of fishermen.
For them, it revives the hope of seeing their profession sustained despite the economic and industrial changes underway in the region.
