Sédhiou : Entre prix élevés et qualité contestée, le marché du mouton tourne au ralenti
The livestock market in Sédhiou is experiencing a surge in visitors as Tabaski approaches, marked by a significant influx of livestock. Vendors from various locations in the region and the interior of the country have flocked to the market, where the pens remain well-stocked for the time being.
The departmental president of the livestock farmers' association, Amath Sow, welcomed the large number of animals available. However, he expressed serious concerns about the critical lack of water on site, a situation that severely complicates the stay of the professionals and the daily care of the animals. The union representative also denounced the excessive cost of livestock feed, which has become a real financial headache for retailers.
Despite these logistical difficulties, Amath Sow welcomed the constant presence of law enforcement at the livestock market, stressing that the police effectively ensure the safety of vendors, customers and their belongings against the risk of theft.
On the buyers' side, customers are gradually returning to the livestock market, but many complain about prices they consider exorbitant. Currently, sheep prices range from 80,000 to 250,000 CFA francs.
Beyond the cost, some customers criticize the quality of the ruminants on offer. This is the case for Mamadou Diatta, who believes that many sheep from the itinerant herd are poorly cared for and in a worrying physical condition. Faced with this situation, this head of household decided to turn back and head to the markets of Ziguinchor, where he hopes to find better quality rams for the holiday.
