Serigne Guèye Diop annonce 45 zones industrielles pour rompre avec 60 ans d'échecs
At the celebration of Nestlé's 65 years of presence in Senegal this Saturday, May 23, the government chose to unveil a new stage in its industrial policy.
Led by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Dr. Serigne Guèye Diop, this new direction resulted in the announcement of the creation of 45 new industrial zones across the country. This initiative reflects the authorities' commitment to accelerating the country's economic transformation.
Among these future infrastructures, 30 zones will be dedicated to the agri-food sector and distributed across Senegal's six territorial hubs. The other 15 will be devoted to vertical industrialization, covering sectors such as pharmaceuticals, mechanics, electronics, textiles, and automotive.
A deliberate break with the past and an appeal to investors
The minister offered a critical assessment of industrial policies implemented since independence, stating that Senegal has "not had a sound industrial policy over the past 60 years." According to him, the National Conference on Industry and Trade identified 35 structural obstacles hindering the sector's development.
In this context, he stressed the need to locally transform the country's resources in order to move away from a model based on the raw export of raw materials.
The strategy is based on several priority sectors, including agri-food, extractive industries (phosphate, oil, gas, Falémé iron ore) and the manufacturing sector including textiles, pharmaceuticals and automobiles.
Addressing investors, the minister delivered a direct message: "We call on investors to join this momentum," he declared, highlighting tax advantages, VAT and customs duty reductions, and a new, more attractive investment code. He also emphasized the government's commitment to promoting industrial development outside major urban areas.
In a broader perspective, the authorities believe that private investment and consumption are the main drivers of wealth creation. The government also states its intention to strengthen transparency in economic management and combat corruption in order to improve the business climate.
Underlying this anniversary ceremony, Senegal presented the outlines of a new and ambitious industrial strategy, focused on local transformation and the diversification of its economy.
