Situation hydrologique du fleuve Gambie : des hausses notables à certains points de mesure

The Hydrology Directorate published this Friday, August 22, 2025, an update on the water levels recorded in the Gambia River and its tributaries. While some stations recorded a decrease, others showed increases, sometimes significant, compared to the previous day and the same period last year.

In Diaguiri, upstream from Mako, the water level reached 4.61 meters, an increase of 56 centimeters compared to yesterday, and slightly above that of last year (4.35 m).

The Niokolo Koba station also recorded significant progress with 6.78 m, 23 cm more than yesterday and almost double the level observed in August 2024 (3.58 m).

Conversely, some stations are in decline:

  1. Afia Pont (Thiokoye): 1.93 m against 2.06 m yesterday, a drop of 13 cm.
  2. Sinthiou Malème: 0.45 m against 0.63 m yesterday (–18 cm).
  3. Diahra Pont: 1.53 m against 1.76 m yesterday (–23 cm).

In Goumbayel, the water level was measured at 1.83 m, higher than that of the same date last year (1.62 m).

In Kédougou, the water level is 5.55 m, slightly lower (–11 cm) than yesterday. Although below the alert level of 7 m, it remains close to the level reached last year (5.83 m).

On the Simenti side, the river is at 7.90 m, compared to 7.99 m yesterday (–9 cm). The alert level there is 13 m, still leaving a comfortable safety margin, even if the level was higher at the same time in 2024 (8.80 m).

Finally, in Mako, the situation is the opposite, with a sharp rise of 39 cm in 24 hours, the river reaching 4.53 m compared to 4.14 m yesterday. This figure remains, however, below the alert level set at 6 m.

Overall, the hydrological trend in the Gambia River basin remains variable depending on the area, with worrying increases in certain tributaries such as Niokolo Koba and Diaguiri. Hydrological authorities are calling for vigilance, especially in localities close to areas experiencing significant increases, to prevent any risk of flooding.
