Early harvest and threatened livestock: Kaffrine's cry for help in the face of peanut fire sales

The president of the Kaffrine departmental council, Abdoulaye Vilane, raised the alarm about the region's worrying socio-economic situation. During the validation of the annual investment plan, the elected official painted a bleak picture of current rural realities, including poor agricultural sales and threats to livestock.

A peanut campaign in distress

According to Abdoulaye Vilane, the peanut marketing campaign is experiencing a deep crisis. In many areas, stocks are piling up due to a lack of buyers at profitable prices.

“Bags of peanuts are still being stored in the fields. Farmers are even spending the night under the open sky to protect their produce from theft or bad weather,” he lamented.

Faced with the financial emergency, many producers have no other choice but to sell off their harvests at rock-bottom prices to survive, thus selling at a loss the fruit of a year's labor.

The threat of a forage crisis

Another worrying phenomenon has been raised: the mass sale of hay. To obtain immediate cash, many cart drivers are transporting and selling their fodder reserves in the markets. This practice, coupled with bushfires, drastically reduces livestock feed resources.

"This risks leading to an early lean period," warns the president of the Departmental Council, who calls on the State to anticipate support measures for the population and livestock before the wintering season.

Security and vigilance at the borders

On the security front, the elected official expressed his concern about the resurgence of drug trafficking, particularly of Indian hemp. Its proximity to Gambia and the Casamance region makes Kaffrine a sensitive area.

"This phenomenon can lead to some violence. We must remain vigilant," he warned, while reiterating his support for the defense and security forces.

Food sovereignty and political responsibility

Abdoulaye Vilane concluded his remarks by urging political actors to exercise restraint so as not to "fuel tensions." In an unstable international context marked by geopolitical conflicts that are impacting transport and import costs, he emphasized a national priority: strengthening food sovereignty. For him, Senegal must urgently produce more cereals to break its dependence on foreign imports.
