Tabaski : « Il n'y aura ni pénurie ni hausse des prix »
With less than two weeks until Tabaski, the Minister of Trade, Serigne Guèye Diop, sought to reassure the public about market supply and price stability. Contacted by L'Observateur, he stated that local onion and potato production in the Niayes, the Valley, and the Saint-Louis region had been "extraordinary," to the point that the government had to close the borders as early as January 25th to protect the marketing of national harvests.
According to the minister, current stocks are sufficient to cover needs "for 8 to 10 months" for certain products, while potato reserves could last "virtually all of 2026." He thus guarantees that "there will be neither pressure on product availability nor price increases," believing that "the market is sufficiently saturated."
To enforce the approved prices, the ministry relies on several control mechanisms. Serigne Guèye Diop first points to the ongoing deployment of commissioners, controllers, and economic investigators throughout the regions. He also highlights the discreet work of "1,000 consumer volunteers" tasked with gathering information on the ground and reporting merchants who do not comply with the approved prices.
