S. Guèye, aged 25, appeared before the Thiès court for attempted theft. He is accused of attempting to steal the mobile phone of the young woman F. Thiam.
According to the complainant, the events took place in the morning, around 7 a.m. After plugging in his phone in his uncle FL Thiam's room, the accused slipped into the house before going upstairs to access the room.
While attempting to unplug the device, he was surprised by the phone's owner. Quickly subdued, S. Guèye was taken to the police station and remanded in custody.
In court, he initially denied the charges, claiming that he had gone to the house in search of a friend named Baye Fallou Diop.
But FL Thiam's testimony undermined his version of events. The uncle of the plaintiff stated that he did not know the defendant and that it was the first time he had ever seen him.
Confronted with witness statements, S. Guèye eventually confessed to wanting to steal the phone, while claiming he didn't know what motivated him to steal. The public prosecutor requested that the law be applied.
After deliberation, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to one month in prison and a fine of 50,000 CFA francs.
