Thiaroye enfin consigné dans un récit national
On October 16, 2025, historian Mamadou Diouf presented President Bassirou Diomaye Faye with the White Paper on the Thiaroye Massacre, the result of a year and a half of research and archival compilation. This document is presented as an act of memorial sovereignty aimed at breaking the silence, establishing the facts, and producing a historical narrative by and for the Senegalese. The president hailed this initiative as a decisive step in the rehabilitation of historical truth and authorized the continuation of archaeological excavations to identify the victims of the 1944 tragedy.
This White Paper is part of a scientific and cultural effort aimed at strengthening the national collective memory. It provides a structured framework for documenting events and transmitting knowledge to future generations, while also serving as an educational and symbolic tool for teaching the country's history.
However, this approach faces sensitive diplomatic challenges. The head of state expressed his disappointment at France's lack of cooperation in making the archives available, revealing the persistence of a memory imbalance and highlighting the challenges related to historical sovereignty. The publication of the White Paper thus illustrates the complexity of reconciling scientific truth, national memory, and international relations, while affirming Senegal's ability to write its own history.
