Thiès : gestion du marché au poisson, «le rapport de l’IGE est clair»
The mayor of Thiès, Babacar Diop, is unhappy with the management model of the recently inaugurated central fish market in Thiès. He believes the central government is trying to exclude his municipality. However, he reveals that the State Inspectorate General (IGE) is advocating for its services to be involved. "The IGE report is clear: the management of the central market and the train station cannot be taken away from the City of Thiès and transferred to other municipalities. That's not what I'm saying," asserts Babacar Diop.
The mayor continued: “To date, the recommendations of the Inspectorate General of State (IGE) have still not been implemented. We do not want the City to suffer the same injustice. That is why we are calling on the Minister [of Fisheries and Maritime and Port Infrastructure] to engage in constructive and responsible dialogue, in the general interest. We are not imposing anything; we are open and available to study any type of model. There are hybrid models where the State and the local authority work together. That is one possibility.”
However, the mayor of Thiès suggests, "the governance model must be participatory. Fishing stakeholders, fishmongers, women processors and local populations must be involved in decision-making and market management."
