Tivaouane : trois enfants meurent dans l’effondrement d’une carrière de sable à Thiep Ndiaye
Tivaouane: Three children die in the collapse of a sand quarry in Thiep Ndiaye
, Tivaouane department. Three 12-year-old children lost their lives after the collapse of an informally operated sand quarry.
According to security sources, the accident occurred around 3 p.m. at a sand extraction site located near homes and regularly frequented by miners.
Initial findings indicate a sudden collapse of the quarry walls, weakened by repeated extractions and the absence of safety measures. The landslide was brutal, burying the victims under large quantities of sand.
According to reports, the children were digging cavities in the sand to protect themselves from the heat, a common practice in this area during periods of high temperatures. Trapped when the landslide collapsed, they left no chance of survival.
A child witnessing the incident, having managed to escape, immediately alerted the villagers. They mobilized to try to rescue the victims before the arrival of the Mékhé gendarmerie and firefighters.
The search operations, conducted jointly by rescue services and local residents, led to the discovery of the three boys' bodies. The remains were taken to the morgue at the Mékhé health center.
Strong emotions and persistent concerns
This tragedy has plunged the community into deep consternation. Many residents are denouncing the dangers of artisanal sand quarries, often operated without proper supervision or adequate safety measures.
