Trafic d’oignons vers la Mauritanie : 11 individus arrêtés par la gendarmerie, 365 sacs saisis
As part of its security mission, the Rosso territorial brigade arrested 11 individuals on the night of March 9-10, 2026, for criminal association and illegal trafficking of agricultural products, in the commune of Ronkh in the department of Dagana.
According to Colonel Ibrahima Ndiaye, the gendarmes acted on intelligence indicating an onion trafficking operation intended for smuggling to a neighboring country. A surveillance and interception system was subsequently established in the area.
Nine individuals were arrested, including six cart drivers and three porters. The latter were transporting sacks of onions on carts and were preparing to cross the Senegal River at a clandestine crossing point located in the village of Khor, in order to reach Mauritania.
Continuing their investigations, the gendarmes identified other people involved, including the alleged mastermind, the truck driver who had fled with part of the cargo, and the captain of the pirogue that was supposed to ensure the crossing of the river.
The truck transporting the agricultural products was eventually found in the village of Ronkh, in front of the home of one of the suspects. In a related development, investigators discovered a large quantity of bags of onions stored in a shop in the village, intended for smuggling abroad.
In total, 11 individuals were arrested. The gendarmes also seized 365 bags of onions weighing 25 kg each, totaling 9.125 tons, a Renault truck, six carts, six horses, and a Yamaha pirogue engine.
