Violences basées sur le genre : L’Association des juristes sénégalaises alerte sur une situation préoccupante en 2025
The Association of Senegalese Women Jurists (AJS) is sounding the alarm. In its 2025 annual report, it reveals that it assisted 7,456 people during the year, the vast majority of whom were victims of violence.
Of these cases, 4,208 involve situations of violence primarily affecting women, with 3,890 victims identified compared to 318 men. These figures reflect the persistent scale of gender-based violence in Senegal.
In detail, psychological violence comes out on top, with 3,298 cases recorded. It manifests itself in particular through degrading remarks, insults related to physical appearance or deeply hurtful words, often trivialized in the social and family sphere.
Economic violence also occupies a significant place, with 2,293 cases. It is mainly linked to the failure to provide maintenance or the refusal to pay child support, placing many women in precarious situations.
Regarding physical violence, 1,210 cases were recorded. As for sexual violence, it remains particularly concerning with 446 reported cases, including rape, incest, forced or early marriage, pedophilia, and female genital mutilation.
The report also mentions obstetric violence, with four cases reported in health facilities, a problem that is still poorly documented, but reveals shortcomings in the care of patients.
Through this data, the AJS raises awareness of the extent of the violence suffered, particularly by women, and calls for an urgent strengthening of mechanisms for prevention, protection and support of victims.
