Waly Diouf Bodiang annonce de grands travaux de dragage pour faire revivre le port de Kaolack
The Director General of the Autonomous Port of Dakar (PAS), Waly Diouf Bodiang, undertook a mission to Kaolack this Wednesday, April 15, 2026. This trip is in line with the implementation of the rehabilitation plan for said infrastructure.
According to the Director General, this visit, beyond its symbolic significance, marks the effective reassertion of control over the port of Kaolack. He explained that he had come "to observe that, since 1930, few significant changes have taken place on the site." He specified that since 2023, the regulatory framework has been in place to facilitate this resumption. To mark the beginning of this dynamic, he emphasized, like the governor, the urgent need for dredging work to improve the nautical capacity of the channel.
Waly Diouf Bodiang also aims to ramp up logistics infrastructure and connections. He affirmed his conviction that the country's development will depend on regional hubs, and Kaolack has a rich port history that now needs to be revitalized. By revitalizing this port, the entire region will regain its economic dynamism. Beyond the regional stakes, this is a national issue, as Kaolack must serve as a hub for Malian traffic, thereby reducing the flow and risk of congestion seen in Dakar.
The Director General reiterated that a port's primary function is its infrastructure, particularly its nautical capacity and draft. He emphasized the need to make the area easily navigable to accommodate as many vessels as possible, while taking into account the technical constraints posed by the Foundiougne bridge. He acknowledged that, currently, the site is a port in name only, as essential features such as handling equipment are lacking. To address this, partners willing to invest will be brought in to acquire logistics and storage capacity, enabling efficient connections to the hinterland. Furthermore, he outlined a comprehensive repositioning plan aimed at transforming the Port of Sahel into an integrated hub, driving Senegal's economic transformation.
The governor of the Kaolack region, Amadou Moctar Watt, spoke to emphasize the great hope the local population places in this project. He indicated that the priority is to resume dredging the channel before modernizing the entire system. To capture a portion of Malian freight, he believes substantial unloading facilities are necessary. He also suggested developing a dry port near Mbadakhoune or Maka Kahone, because if the port is restored to its original function in a timely manner, the existing reclaimed land will be able to handle all of the freight in transit.
Alongside this visit, the Director General of the PAD officially installed the new regional director of the port of Kaolack.
