"Yaye dina la raye" : Excédée par les menaces de son fils, une mère le traîne devant la justice et implore qu’on le garde six mois en prison
While many children were celebrating their mothers last Sunday for Mother's Day, Ms. Ndiaye was experiencing a very different ordeal. Fed up with the insults, violence, and repeated threats from her son, B. Diome, she took legal action.
In the dock of the Mbour High Court during the summary proceedings hearing, the plaintiff recounted the suffering she has endured for several years. "Since last year, he constantly tells me: 'Yaye dina la raye' (mother, I'm going to kill you). He beats me and insults me when he is drunk," she declared.
His daughter, MI Diome, confirmed the accusations against her brother. According to her, B. Diome regularly threatens their mother with death and maintains a climate of fear within the family.
But when faced with the magistrates, the defendant rejected the accusations. "This is the fourth time she's served me with a summons. It's all related to my father's inheritance. They want to give everything to my sister and my cousin, who is also her husband. What she's saying isn't true," he argued.
Invited by the presiding judge to make a claim for damages, Mr. Ndiaye surprised the audience with his response: "Keep him in prison for six months." A statement that provoked laughter in the courtroom.
The judge then explained that this decision was not within her jurisdiction. The mother immediately clarified her true expectation: "That he stop threatening to kill me and leave me alone. That's all I ask. If he threatens me again, I will bring him back to court."
The public prosecutor requested that the law be applied. The court will render its decision on June 9th.
