Ziguinchor Corruption Scandal: MP Exposes Rampant Bribery in Vehicle Inspection System

In Ziguinchor, ongoing reports of corruption within the mining service sector continue to spark public outrage. MP Guy Marius Sagna has once again challenged the government through a formal written inquiry, highlighting recurring cases of extortion during mandatory vehicle technical inspections.

According to information presented by the parliamentarian, certain officials allegedly demand illegal payments ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 CFA francs (approximately $8-$16 USD) from citizens undergoing mandatory vehicle inspections. The practice is particularly alarming given that approximately thirty vehicles undergo inspection daily at this facility. The MP stated the most recent documented case occurred on April 8, 2026, when a motorist reported being solicited for a 5,000 CFA franc payment to "facilitate" his inspection. This would mark the third documented case involving the same office, with clear identification of the implicated officials.

Beyond corruption concerns, Guy Marius Sagna warned of the potential consequences of these practices. Technical inspections are essential for ensuring road safety by checking critical systems like brakes, steering, and emissions. If these inspections are compromised by fraudulent practices, defective vehicles could remain on the roads, significantly increasing accident risks. In a country like Senegal, which already faces high road accident rates, the situation is deemed particularly dangerous.

In his correspondence, the MP directly questioned the Minister of Transport on several key points. He first demanded to know why these practices persist despite repeated, well-documented reports. He further questioned whether local service managers have lost control of the situation. Finally, he pressed for concrete measures to be implemented to end these abuses.

The elected official called for swift action from authorities to restore transparency and public trust in this essential service. Additionally, MP Sagna encouraged citizens who have experienced or witnessed such practices to come forward, helping to further document these incidents and support eradication efforts.
