On the occasion of the 138th Marian pilgrimage of Popenguine, the National Gendarmerie deployed an impressive security apparatus to ensure the protection of pilgrims and guarantee the smooth flow of traffic on the roads leading to the holy city.
A courtesy visit before the big rollout
On the eve of the pilgrimage, the High Commander of the Gendarmerie paid a courtesy visit to Monsignor André Gueye, Archbishop of Dakar, thus marking the willingness of the security forces to engage in a spirit of collaboration and respect with religious authorities.
On Saturday, May 23, 2026, Major General Martin Faye, High Commander of the National Gendarmerie and Director of Military Justice, accompanied by his staff, inspected the security measures put in place on the ground, Seneweb learned from Colonel Ibrahima.
This system, designed to guarantee the free movement and safety of pilgrims, covers the main road axes leading to Popenguine and its surroundings.
A massive deployment of 1,496 soldiers
To carry out this mission, the command mobilized 1,496 military personnel from organic squadrons and specialized units, supported by significant logistical resources. These personnel are deployed along the entire route, particularly on the highway and National Route 1, as well as in the towns of Thiès, Sindia, Ndayane, the marchers' village, religious sites, parking areas, Ngékhokh, and Popenguine.
