[Le Match] Débit internet, qualité et prix : Qui gagne entre Starlink et Orange ?
Starlink, the SpaceX subsidiary owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has launched in Senegal. The American company aims to compete with the market leader in Senegal, Orange. But with its two offerings and satellite internet, can Starlink truly challenge Orange in the broadband market?
First, it's important to know that the bandwidth and speed of an internet service are measured in Megabits per second (Mbps). The higher the bandwidth, the faster the internet connection and the better it can handle online activities.
Debit and price
Regarding internet speed, Starlink offers a "Residential" range at 33,000 FCFA, with 135 to 305 Mbps download speed and 20 to 40 Mbps upload speed, then a second range, the "Residential Lite", with a download speed of 80 to 200 Mbps and an upload speed of 15 to 35 Mbps.
For its part, Orange offers several internet plans. The first, more affordable for low-income Senegalese households, is priced at 14,900 CFA francs. This plan offers a download speed of 10 Mbps and an upload speed of 3 Mbps. The next plan, which most closely resembles Starlink's "Residential Lite," is priced at 21,900 CFA francs, 100 CFA francs less than Elon Musk's company's plan. It offers a download speed of 20 Mbps and an upload speed of 5 Mbps.
Orange offers 3 other offers, including the one at 26900 Fcfa (40 mbts/s receive and 10 mbts/s send), the one at 39,900 Fcfa (100 mbts/s receive and 20 mbts/s send), then the one that comes closest to the "Residential" offer of Starlink, the Premium range of Orange, set at 54,900 Fcfa, with a receive speed of 150 mbts/s and 35 mbts/s send.
Starlink Versus Orange
Proportionally, in terms of speed, Starlink offers a premium range of better quality than Orange, at a much lower price (33,000 FCFA versus 54,900 FCFA). This is also the case for the "Residential Lite" offer at 22,000 FCFA, which is three times faster than Orange's offer at 21,900 FCFA, for a difference of only 100 FCFA. Starlink also offers better quality, with low latency.
Ping is the time it takes for the internet service to send and receive data between your device and a server. The higher the ping, the higher the potential latency on your internet connection. Thanks to its satellites, Starlink offers a service with very low latency, ideal for streaming or online gaming.
However, Orange wins the battle for flexibility in its offers. With its 14,900 Mbps plan, Orange can attract customers with limited purchasing power, offering a stable connection that can meet the needs of families using the internet. The other area where Orange outperforms Starlink is in installation costs.
The American company announced on its website for Senegal that customers will have a choice between two kits. One (mini) costs 117,000 CFA francs plus 14,000 CFA francs for shipping (131,000 CFA francs total), and the other costs 146,000 CFA francs, plus 14,000 CFA francs for shipping (160,000 CFA francs total). The least expensive Starlink option will cost 131,000 CFA francs for installation alone. Installation prices for the larger kits range from 24,900 to 35,000 CFA francs, depending on the chosen package. This represents a difference of 106,100 CFA francs when considering only the cheapest offers from the two companies.
Match verdict
In a country where purchasing power is very limited, the financial aspect is crucial. Orange thus wins its battle against Starlink, thanks to its flexibility, but also because of the exorbitant installation costs of Starlink kits. However, if the American multinational lowers its installation prices, the competition between the two in the Senegalese internet market could be completely reignited.
