4 Avril à Thiès : Le Pr. Diomaye reçoit les trois autres maires après la polémique autour de Babacar Diop
After the mayor of the city of Thiès, Dr Babacar Diop, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye received this Friday, at the Palace of the Republic, the three other mayors of the communes of Thiès: Ousmane Diagne (Thiès East), Mamadou Diakhaté (Thiès North) and Mamadou Djité (Thiès West).
This hearing comes amid tensions between these officials and the mayor of the City of Thiès, whom they accused of having organized a meeting with the head of state on his own in order to gain a political advantage in view of the celebration of April 4 in the capital of the Railway.
Upon their return to Thiès, the three mayors held a press conference to inform the public about the content of their discussions with the President of the Republic. Unlike Mayor Babacar Diop, they felt it necessary to publicly report on this meeting and to be transparent with the people of Thiès.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Mamadou Djité, mayor of Thiès West, welcomed the invitation from the Head of State. “We were received this morning by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. This follows his invitation, which greatly honored us. As mayors, we can only rejoice in such an invitation, because a local elected official represents both the State and their community,” he declared.
According to him, the discussion focused primarily on the organization of the April 4th celebration, planned for this year in Thiès. He reiterated that this national holiday belongs to all Senegalese and that the participation of all the mayors in the region is essential.
The city officials took advantage of this meeting to present the Head of State with several grievances concerning the concerns of the people of Thiès. These included the poor condition of the roads, sanitation problems, and the need to build overpasses on certain strategic routes in the city.
Mamadou Djité also stressed that the celebration of Independence Day should go beyond a simple military parade and constitute an opportunity to stimulate structuring projects in the host region.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye acknowledged that the timeframe for completing certain projects before the April 4th celebrations was relatively short. However, he assured them that their concerns would be taken into account and that important decisions would be announced on the day of the celebration, with implementation by the relevant ministries.
The mayors also proposed the organization of a presidential council or an inter-ministerial council in order to involve all the mayors of the Thiès region in the preparation of the event.
Finally, they suggested that the head of state stay in Thiès for two days before the celebration, in order to better understand the realities of the region and to connect with the people.
“We must give him an exceptional welcome. The President honored the Thiès region by organizing the Independence Day celebration there, and it is our duty to return the favor,” concluded Mamadou Djité.
