4 avril : Saint-Louis célèbre avec éclat la fête de l’indépendance
In a festive and patriotic atmosphere, Saint-Louis celebrated Senegal's Independence Day with a grand parade. Civil and military authorities, local residents, and foreign guests came together to celebrate the values of national unity and the partnership between the armed forces and the nation, against the backdrop of preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
Like other towns and cities across the country, the three-hundred-year-old city of Saint-Louis resonated with the celebration of Senegal's independence on April 4th. The commemoration was marked by a grand parade and a strong turnout from administrative and military authorities, as well as the general public.
The ceremony, overseen by Colonel Alioune Samassa, commander of Military Zone Number 2, was held in the presence of the regional governor, Al Hassane Sall, as well as several civil, military, and traditional authorities. The parade, organized on President Macky Sall Avenue, was a vibrant and disciplined spectacle.
This year, the celebration was held around the theme: "Defense and security forces, partners of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games." A choice in line with the preparations for this historic event for the African continent.
In his address, the head of the regional executive recalled the symbolic significance of April 4th, which marks Senegal's accession to international sovereignty. He emphasized that this day represents a moment of unity between the defense and security forces and the population, illustrating national cohesion.
The governor also emphasized the importance of the civil-military parade, a solemn moment when civilians, military personnel, and paramilitaries come together in a shared patriotic display. He praised the spirit of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, focused on youth, culture, and innovation—values he believes are embodied by the Senegalese army through its commitment to serving the nation.
The ceremony was also marked by the presence of the Wali of Trarza, testifying to the strength of relations between Senegal and Mauritania. The governor praised these historical, fraternal, and economic ties, highlighting in particular the joint projects between the two countries, including the exploitation of cross-border resources.
Reflecting on the parade, he praised the exceptional quality of the performances offered by the various participants: students, majorettes, professional organizations, community groups, veterans, as well as military and paramilitary units. He attributed this success to the rigor and professionalism of the defense and security forces.
A strong tribute was also paid to the veterans, who were praised for their courage, sense of duty and contribution to the defence of the nation.
In a regional context marked by security challenges, the governor reaffirmed the Senegalese army's commitment to protecting the territory and its people. He reiterated that the army remains dedicated solely to serving the nation, faithful to its values of loyalty and dedication. He also congratulated Colonel Alioune Samassa and all those involved in organizing the celebration, while commending the remarkable turnout of the people of Saint-Louis.
This edition of the Independence Day celebration will thus remain etched in memory as a moment of national unity, expression of patriotism and promotion of the partnership between the army and the nation.
