Carte prépayée : Orange Money présente sa Mastercard

A new digital payment offer is emerging in Senegal with the launch of the Orange Money Mastercard prepaid card.

This initiative, a collaboration between Orange Money, Orange Bank, Mastercard, and Network International, aims to broaden access to financial services for Senegalese people, whether or not they have a bank account. The card, available immediately, allows for local and international transactions and integrates directly with the Orange Money e-wallet via the Max it app.

According to Youssoupha Sall, CEO of Orange Financial Services, this launch "brings to fruition a series of innovations that Orange Money has developed in partnership with Orange Bank, Mastercard, and Network International, which have been underway for several months." He explains that the main objective is to offer a payment method to Senegalese citizens while strengthening financial inclusion. "This prepaid card also embodies one of the major achievements we have made with credit through Orange Bank, which is now a reality," he adds. He notes that nearly 500,000 Senegalese already benefit from credit via mobile money.

The card is used entirely through the Max it app. After downloading and registering, users can top up their card from their Orange Money wallet. Once loaded, the card allows all transactions authorized by Mastercard, both domestic and international. According to Youssoupha Sall, "Using this card offers complete convenience. It is entirely secure; you can use the card just like your Orange Money wallet under very secure conditions with a pre-defined PIN."

Transaction security remains a central element of this innovation. Payments are protected according to international standards from Mastercard and Network International, including PCI DSS certification and 3D Secure technology. Users have complete access to their transaction history via the application, which offers real-time control over their balance and financial activity.

Mohamed Benomar, Mastercard's regional director for North and Francophone Africa, highlights the importance of security and international compliance. He explains, "What we're deploying here, what we launched today, is a card that meets international standards. When I talk about international standards, whether in terms of security or fraud management, we have servers that will monitor these transactions to ensure there is no fraud." He also emphasizes the importance of adoption by young people: "Approximately 75% of young people are ready to use innovation. They are ready to adopt innovative payment methods."

This card is not simply a payment tool. It also addresses the diverse needs of Senegalese people, particularly in terms of savings, credit, and participation in collective systems such as tontines, which are especially popular among women. Youssoupha Sall explains that "Orange Money has committed to providing concrete solutions to the needs of the Senegalese people."

The prepaid card is offered free of charge: no activation fees, no top-up fees, no transaction fees, and no fees for failed transactions. Users also benefit from competitive exchange rates for transactions in euros or dollars. The offer is available to all citizens, regardless of age or banking status, and complements the digital financial services already available in the country.

With over 15 years of experience in mobile money, Orange Money is pursuing a strategy of continuous innovation. According to Youssoupha Sall, "these innovations introduced with the card are part of what we now call interoperability. This is an initial response, and other responses are underway."

The heads of the companies involved announced that further developments will follow. The inclusion of additional features related to credit, savings, and online services was announced. Mohamed Benomar concluded that this collaboration aims to "open the world to all Orange Money Senegal wallet users," enabling transactions across all continents.

Are you kidding me? You put your own money in this card with probably an initial fee and more fees if you use any out of network ATM machines. The prepaid card is also not a credit card. You will be better off with cash without the hidden fees . The real challenge is for the country to make sure every citizen can open and have a bank account with little or no maintenance fees. Please no time to celebrate. We can do better.
