Dépollution de la Baie de Hann : Un projet à 95 % de réalisation qui redonne espoir à 500 000 Sénégalais
The Hann Bay wastewater treatment plant was the meeting point for a large international delegation on Monday, January 26, 2026. The Minister of the Environment welcomed representatives from the European Union as well as a French delegation led by the French Ambassador to Senegal.
This field visit is part of the rigorous monitoring of the Hann Bay cleanup project, a major initiative for the environmental restoration of the Dakar coastline.
A long-standing health and economic challenge
Led by the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS), this project addresses a critical environmental situation following decades of uncontrolled industrial and domestic wastewater discharge. This degradation has long impacted the health of local residents and the local economy, particularly the fishing sector. To remedy this, ONAS has designed an integrated system to intercept and sustainably treat wastewater before it is discharged into the sea, while also incorporating principles of a circular economy.
Authorities and financial partners have noted significant progress: the overall completion rate now exceeds 95%. Efforts are currently focused on finalizing the marine outfall, the key component of the system. Full commissioning could occur before the end of 2026, preceded by a phase of technical testing.
Supported at the highest level of government by the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Water Resources, this project is of strategic importance. "This close monitoring demonstrates the strategic importance given to this project, which is expected to directly impact more than 500,000 people in environmental, health, and socio-economic terms," emphasized Éléonore Carolt, French Minister for International Partnerships.
The Director General of ONAS, Seyni Diène, praised this innovative cooperation, which goes beyond mere financing. According to him, the project will drive urban renewal across nine municipalities, from the Autonomous Port of Dakar to Mbao, thus guaranteeing a better quality of life for current and future generations. This visit marks a decisive step towards the revitalization of one of the world's most beautiful bays.

Construire une telle station et être obligé de passer un contrat au constructeur pour la faire tourner à l’eau propre car on n’a pas été capable de construire les réseaux à temps. Les eaux usées débordent de partout et la station qui devrait les traiter ronronne à l’eau propre. C’est une honte.
On devrait balayer tous ceux qui sont mêlés à ce projet
