Efficacité énergétique : l’AEME atteint un niveau record avec 1,55 milliard FCFA en 2025
To improve energy efficiency, the Agency for Energy Conservation and Management (AEME) has generated nearly 20 billion in savings by 2025 since the agency became operational. This was revealed by Mame Coumba Ndiaye, Director General of AEME, a guest on the Seneweb Eco program this Sunday, April 5, 2026.
According to her, these results are based on optimizing the public electricity bill, which saved 10.2 billion CFA francs, and on energy efficiency measures themselves, which generated 9 billion CFA francs in financial impact. For 2025 alone, the director general anticipates 1.55 billion CFA francs in savings, a level she presents as a record.
Returning to the extent of the untapped potential, the statistical engineer states that "Senegal has a national potential of 28% for energy savings and 36% for the electricity sub-sector." Faced with this largely untapped potential, the Director General assures that the programs are "finalized, evaluated, quantified, and ready to be implemented." Thus, in its new 2025-2029 strategic plan, AEME estimates the financial gains that can be mobilized over five years at "nearly 90 billion," of which "64 billion" are for the electricity sector alone.
On the ground, the initial actions are producing measurable effects. The awareness campaign encouraging households to reduce their consumption during peak hours has, according to her, resulted in "a reduction of 16.5 MW" in national demand, representing a cost of nearly 17.4 billion FCFA.
For Mame Coumba Ndiaye, controlling energy demand is part of a broader strategy. "When we better control energy demand, needs will decrease," she explains, seeing it as a direct lever for reducing heavy investments in production capacity.
Furthermore, AEME is leveraging digitalization to structure these gains. Energy management systems are already deployed in several public buildings. "We already have 28 equipped administrative buildings, and the goal is to interconnect the entire building stock," explains the energy economist. In public lighting, pilot projects are showing high performance, with savings of up to 70% thanks to the introduction of more efficient technologies and control systems.
