Inauguration du marché au poisson de Thiès : Ce que Dr Babacar Diop reproche au Ministre des Pêches
"Madam Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Dr. Fatou Diouf, this market, which did not fall from the sky, is a vision, an idea of the city of Thiès, conceived well before you were appointed head of this Department. It was the city council, then led by the former mayor Talla Sylla, that passed a resolution for a plot of land to accommodate it. This was within the framework of the development plan for the city of Thiès."
These remarks were made by the mayor of Thiès, Dr Babacar Diop, during the official opening, this Saturday, January 24, 2026, of the new central fish market in Thiès, with a total cost of 2,223,798,481 FCFA including tax, financed by the National Maritime Affairs Agency's own funds.
The mayor, concerned about the possibility of transferring the market's management to the municipality of Thiès-Nord, to the detriment of the city hall, reminded everyone: "The State of Senegal, which is the primary partner of a municipality, financed this market, and it was the then Minister of Fisheries, Alioune Ndoye, who laid the foundation stone. The State being a continuous entity, with institutions transferring seamlessly," the mayor continued, "you, Madam Minister, were able to complete the work to everyone's satisfaction."
He continued: "From the outset, we have collaborated with the Ministry of Fisheries throughout the entire process, in the interest of Senegal, in accordance with the philosophy outlined by the President of the Republic around the 'Jub-Jubal-Jubanti' principle. For this reason, in the name of the national interest and the best interests of the people of Thiès, we urge you to work on the basis of consultation, dialogue, and exchange, so as not to resort to coercion or contempt. It must be understood that there is room for everyone."
Unfortunately, Dr. Babacar Diop laments, "today we have officially contacted you through several letters, but to this day, we have received no response. All our letters have gone unanswered. Yet we seek nothing more than to support you in your endeavor."
The mayor, who launched the works alongside the former Minister of Fisheries, Alioune Ndoye, refutes the argument that the market is located within the municipal territory of Thiès-Nord. "This is a false debate, because all the municipalities together constitute the City of Thiès, and this element cannot justify excluding the central municipality," stated Dr. Diop.
