«Je ne suis pas du tout d’accord…» : Pape Thiaw ferme la porte à un départ de Sadio Mané
On the eve of the grand final of the Africa Cup of Nations, the coach of Senegal, Pape Thiaw, appeared at a press conference with a clear message: stay focused on the game, respect the refereeing and protect the symbols of the national team, starting with Sadio Mané.
When asked about the pressure surrounding the refereeing and the possibility that every little action could be penalized in the final, Pape Thiaw preferred to downplay the situation: "I hope not. I prefer not to talk about the refereeing, because everyone can make mistakes. I, as a coach, have made them. Players also sometimes make the wrong choices. We have to accept refereeing errors sometimes."
The Senegalese coach assures that his team is mentally prepared to face any situation: “We are mentally prepared. Whatever happens, we will play our game, we will give our all and we will give everything. And we hope that in the end, we will take the cup and bring it back to Dakar. God willing,” he prays.
The press conference was also marked by a question about the future of the Senegalese national team and what will happen after Sadio Mané. Pape Thiaw is currently refusing to consider this possibility.
“Today, when your name is Sadio Mané, the decision isn’t his alone. There’s an entire nation behind him. And that nation would like to see him continue,” the coach explained. He believes the decision mentioned by the Senegalese star was made in the heat of the moment: “I think he made this decision impulsively. And the country doesn’t agree. As the coach, I completely disagree. We would like to keep him as long as possible.”
Pape Thiaw then paid a heartfelt tribute to his attacking leader: "He is a legend. He represents Senegal, he represents Africa, he represents the world. He is an example. We need people like him in this life. He teaches life lessons through his humility, his education, and his unwavering commitment to the game."
He recalled the player's total commitment during the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations: "He gave his all so we could win our first star. He took on enormous responsibilities. Do we want to see someone like that leave? I don't. And neither do his teammates." His unambiguous conclusion: "We have to keep this guy."
