Mbeubeuss : Moussa Balla Fofana promet une décharge transformée en pôle écologique de dernière génération
The Minister of Urban Planning, Local Authorities and Regional Development, Moussa Balla Fofana, carried out a field visit to the Mbeubeuss landfill site on Thursday, September 25, 2025, to note the progress of the modernization project of the country's largest landfill and to reaffirm the State's desire to make it "a model of the latest generation of ecological and social transition serving communities."
A 22 billion FCFA project for a modern site
Launched in March 2025, the project, funded to the tune of 22 billion FCFA, covers 40 hectares of the landfill's 115 hectares. Its first phase, scheduled for completion in July 2026, includes the construction of a sorting and transfer center and a waste recovery unit, green spaces, and social and collective infrastructure.
"When we're finished here, it will be a site with a waste treatment center, sports areas, and green spaces. But above all, the environmental impact will be able to be rigorously analyzed, and the system put in place will sustainably protect the living environment of those who live here," the minister emphasized.
The future of waste pickers after the transformation of the Mbeubeuss landfill?
Regarding landfill workers, particularly waste pickers, the minister reaffirmed his commitment to continuing this dynamic with transparency, consultation, and efficiency to provide landfill residents and workers with a healthy living environment. He indicated that this project will change the daily lives of landfill workers. Beyond infrastructure, Moussa Balla Fofana emphasized the need for a change in mentalities.
"We cannot change Senegal if every Senegalese wants to remain as they are. We must accept new developments, adapt, integrate, and train in other professions. We must no longer be just a waste collector, but become a worker or develop a business structured around recycling while respecting all the standards. I reiterate my words: those who work with waste will be a priority in everything we put in place. We are open to support," he reassures.
For the minister, this transformation represents a historic break: a way to eradicate fly-tipping and turn the page on open-air dumps.
With this project, the Mbeubeuss landfill, long a symbol of pollution, will become a next-generation ecological hub, a showcase for a new waste management policy in Senegal.
