« Nous n'accepterons plus ces morts » : El Malick Ndiaye déclare la guerre aux « Cheikhou Chérifou »
The Speaker of the National Assembly, El Malick Ndiaye, broke his silence on the alarming increase in road accidents involving vehicles commonly known as "Cheikhou Chérifou." Drawing on his experience as a former Minister of Transport, he described the situation as unacceptable and assured that the legislative and executive branches would work together to implement firm measures.
According to the Speaker of Parliament, the problem lies not in the importation itself, but in the post-importation technical modifications. These vehicles, often coming from right-hand drive countries, arrive in Senegal with the steering wheel on the opposite side to our national standards.
Once in the country, many owners relocate the steering column to the left. El Malick Ndiaye highlighted the dangers of these modifications, often carried out haphazardly. According to him, these alterations severely compromise chassis stability and steering precision.
This structural fragility would explain why these vehicles are particularly vulnerable during overtaking maneuvers, frequently ending up overturning on the road.
"We must stop letting Senegalese people die like flies."
In the face of this human tragedy, the President of the National Assembly stressed the urgent need to protect road users. His firm speech suggests a strengthening of legal frameworks and increased traffic enforcement.
“The state will take general measures, because we will not accept people dying like flies in accidents involving ‘Cheikhou Chérifou’ vehicles,” he insisted. This commitment signals a clear political will to put an end to a form of makeshift repairs that costs too many lives on Senegalese roads.
