Thiès : les autorités lancent des plans pour lutter contre les inondations et l’urbanisation incontrôlée

Floods are a major problem in the Thiès region. To address this, a workshop to launch the Intercommunal Urban Planning Plans (PCUI), the Flood Risk Management Plans (PGRI) and the Drainage Master Plans (PDD) was held this Tuesday, under the chairmanship of the Deputy Governor, Ababacar Sadikh Niang.

In his address, he emphasized that climate change is exacerbating rainfall instability in Senegal and causing sea levels to rise, increasing the vulnerability of the population. These phenomena have led to severe flooding in recent years, forcing the government to activate the ORSEC Plan several times between 2020 and 2022.

Faced with these challenges, Ababacar Sadikh Niang stressed that the government is focusing on sustainable solutions through the implementation of "Vision Senegal 2050" and the National Development Strategy 2025-2029. The objective is to strengthen risk prevention through forward-looking urban planning and structural investments, particularly in drainage infrastructure.

In this context, he announced that the Municipal Development Agency (ADM), through PROGEP II, has launched the development of these planning tools at an estimated total cost of 800 million CFA francs. Twelve local authorities in the departments of Thiès and Mbour are involved.

For the Mbour department, these are the communes of Diass, Popenguine-Ndayane, Malicounda, Ngaparou, Saly Portudal, Sindia, and Somone. For the Thiès department, these are the communes of Fandène, Keur Moussa, Pout, Kayar, and Diender Guedj.

According to the Deputy Governor, this initiative aims to better regulate urbanization, anticipate flood risks, and strengthen the resilience of territories, with a view to sustainable socio-economic development. It also seeks to improve land use and the coordination of actions between the State and local authorities.

To carry out the studies, ADM recruited a group of firms tasked with proposing strategies integrating sustainable city models.

Calling for strong mobilization, the Deputy Governor invited all stakeholders to get actively involved, favouring a participatory and inclusive approach to ensure ownership of the results.
