Touba : Lancement d'un projet de drainage des eaux pluviales de 15 milliards de FCFA
The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dieye, conducted a field visit to the holy city of Touba this Saturday, followed by the launch of a new, major stormwater drainage project. This program, valued at 15 billion CFA francs, is entirely funded by the Senegalese government.
This site visit brought together all institutional, territorial, and community stakeholders in a spirit of consultation and coordinated action. The objective is to effectively coordinate the implementation of this major project designed to provide long-term protection for the religious city against recurring floods.
Structures already operational near the Great Mosque
The ministerial delegation began its visit near the home of Serigne Abdou Lakhad, where the Directorate of Flood Prevention and Management (DPGI) has constructed major infrastructure. This infrastructure includes two pumping tanks with a capacity of 700 m³/h, 45 collection chambers, and modern drainage systems.
With an implementation rate approaching 80%, these improvements are already producing visible results on the ground. The significant reduction in flooding around the Great Mosque of Touba is a testament to this, as several previously critical low-lying areas have been permanently addressed. The installed drains also help lower the water table in this particularly sensitive area.
Darou Rahmane: An essential link in the drainage system
The Minister then traveled to Darou Rahmane where he greeted and thanked Khalif Serigne Modou Habib Mbacké for generously providing land for the construction projects. This area is a crucial component of the gravity-fed system that will carry rainwater to the Ndock Valley.
Through this project, the Ministry confirms its commitment to nature-based solutions, allowing rainwater to follow its natural flow while strengthening the resilience of the territory.
A courtesy visit to the spokesman for the Caliph
The first stage of this visit concluded with a courtesy meeting with the spokesperson for the General Caliph of the Mourides, Serigne Bassirou Abdou Khadr. Minister Cheikh Tidiane Dieye presented him with an overview of the new project, the implementation of which has been entrusted to the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS).
This program aims to sustainably reduce the impacts of flooding in several strategic districts of Touba, including Guédé, Féto, Nguiranène, Firdawsi, Kawsara Fall, Keur Niang, Darou Khoudouss, Darou Miname and Sourah, which are among the areas most vulnerable to rainwater.
This initiative is part of the government's overall vision to protect urban populations from the risks of flooding while preserving the environment through sustainable and nature-friendly solutions.
