Ziguinchor: BAL relies on coaches to transform Senegalese basketball

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) has launched a training clinic in Ziguinchor, led by coach Cheikh Sarr, aimed at strengthening coaches' skills and reinforcing the technical foundations of young players. The initiative seeks to structure the development of Senegalese basketball by emphasizing fundamentals, discipline, and step-by-step progression.

Through this program, the BAL aims to raise the level of basketball in Africa, starting with the coaches. "To raise the level of the players, you must first raise the level of the coaches," Coach Cheikh Sarr emphasized. The workshops focused on offensive and defensive fundamentals: spacing, rotations, gapping, ball-handler orientation, screen management, and tactical discipline. The coach stressed the importance of respecting the developmental stages, particularly for the U13 and U15 age groups, who must master the basics before aiming for high performance. Too often, coaches prioritize immediate victory over sustainable progress.

Beyond the technical aspects, the issue of infrastructure remains a major challenge. "Basketball is an indoor sport. If every region had its own arena, it would be a decisive step," emphasized Cheikh Sarr. In the meantime, the BAL contributes to the renovation of existing courts, but the construction of new arenas remains the responsibility of the state.

Young players, like Siemens Mamadou Thomas Sagna from CEMT Basket Club, appreciated the initiative: "We learned about movement, team and individual play. These clinics allow us to translate technique into effectiveness on the court." But they also denounced the local difficulties: unplayable courts during the rainy season and a lack of competitiveness.

This momentum is part of a broader vision: to prepare Senegal for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, particularly in 3x3 basketball, and to strengthen the competitiveness of both women's and men's basketball. Talent is emerging, but its future will depend on the coaches' ability to instill rigor and discipline.

By placing coaches at the heart of its program, the BAL and Cheikh Sarr are laying the foundations for a structured and competitive basketball system. Ziguinchor is thus becoming a symbol of the commitment to building a solid future for Senegalese basketball, where youth and technical skill combine to transform potential into results.
