Dakar, Nov 29: Captain of both Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, Raul Gonzales made his first trip to Africa on Tuesday (November 28) as a good will ambassador for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. The trip is aimed at highlighting Africa's ongoing fight against hunger. Around 34 nations in the world face serious food deficiency, of which 23 are in Africa. Raul became a U.N. ambassador in 2004 but this is first visit to see the work that the United Nations is carrying out on the ground in the developing world. In a country where almost every boy dreams of becoming a football star, Raul was received like a king.

As the Gambia's Presidential election is fastly approaching, shake ups and interference in to the affairs of the country's Independent Electoral Commission responsible to run a free and a fair elections, has made many to question the credibility of the commission. Many others are beginning to wonder if the Presidential elections slated to take place in two months, will be free and fair. Many are also questioning; why the President decides who should lead the commission and how the composition of the commission should look like? An Independent Electoral Commission in any proper democratic setting should operate independently without any affiliation to neither the ruling party or to any opposition party.
DAKAR, 31 May 2006 (IRIN/PLUSNEWS)- As the Senegalese authorities crack down against illegal migrants, destination country Spain has launched a high-profile diplomatic offensive to bolster cooperation with West African leaders.“The only future for illegal migration is return - the alternative is death by drowning,” Spain’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Bernardino Leon said on Wednesday. “Our two governments share the same humanitarian concerns.”Speaking to reporters after meeting Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade, the minister said Spain had agreed to help Senegal to try to keep its people at home by funding a scheme to encourage 10,000 young people to return to the countryside to take up farming.
DAKAR, 31 May 2006 (IRIN) - As more and more young men from Senegal climb into fishing boats in the hopes of making it to Europe, efforts are growing to keep the legions of would-be migrants safe at home on dry land. “We can’t just stand here and let these people leave to drown in the Atlantic,” said Amadou Mountaga Sarr.“We must warn them about the danger and tell them what’s really out there,” added Sarr, news editor of a community radio station called Oxyjeunes that operates from a shantytown outside Dakar.
