DAKAR, Dec 31 (Reuters) - Suspected separatists in Senegal's restive Casamance province killed a prominent local ruling party official by slitting his throat late on Saturday, ahead of the Muslim Eid al-Adha feast, a security force official said. Armed men attacked Oumar Lamine Badji, president of the regional council of President Abdoulaye Wade's ruling Democratic Party (PDS), at his family home in the village of Sindian, around 50 km (30 miles) from the provincial capital Ziguinhor, the official said.
Dakar, 09/25 - Senegal`s former Prime Minister Idrissa Seck has announced plans to shortly form a political party called Rewmi ("the country", in Wolof) with an ambition to improve the political, economic and social situation in Senegal.Seck made this announcement in a speech broadcast Sunday on private Senegalese radio stations, shortly after he returned from France where he spent several months.Idrissa Seck, 47, who was deputy secretary general of the Democratic Party of Senegal (PDS), spent 7 months in prison following a judicial inquiry into spending from government coffers on national construction works in Thies, 70 km from Dakar.

BANJUL, March 27 (Reuters) - A group of senior military officials accused of planning to overthrow the Gambian government appeared on state television on Monday confessing to a plot to take over the tiny West African country. The Gambian authorities have arrested 28 men, including 15 army officers, since announcing last Wednesday they had uncovered a coup plot in its advanced stages led by Colonel Ndure Cham, the country's former Chief of Defence Staff.
BANJUL, March 28 - Gambian police sealed off the offices of the tiny West African country's Independent newspaper and arrested its entire staff on Tuesday, a day after the paper printed two articles critical of President Yahya Jammeh. Most employees were released after questioning but Managing Director Madi Ceesay -- who is also president of the Gambia Press Union -- and Editor Musa Saidy Khan remained in detention on Tuesday afternoon, members of the newspaper's staff said. The arrests were a further sign of tension in the poor former British colony less than a week after the government said it had foiled a coup plot and launched a crackdown in which 28 people, including 15 army officers, have been arrested.
BANJUL (Reuters) - Gambia's government said on Wednesday it had uncovered a coup plot led by the country's defence chief and arrested most of those involved, except the military ringleader who was on the run. An official statement announced the conspiracy in the tiny West African country after President Yahya Jammeh had cut short a trip to Mauritania late on Tuesday and returned home. "The security forces discovered in the late hours of yesterday that a group of army officers led by Colonel Ndure Cham, former Chief of Defence Staff, were at an advanced stage in a plot to overthrow the constituted government of the Republic of Gambia," the statement said.
