Qui est Nenneh Cheyassim Secka-Kebe, la Gambienne qui a dépensé près d’un million de Dalasis lors d’un concert de Wally Seck ?
A few months ago, a wealthy Gambian woman named Nenneh Cheyassim Secka-Kebe flaunted her wealth at a concert by Senegalese singer Wally Seck. That evening, Ms. Cheyassim spent nearly one million Dalasis (7,796,000 FCFA). In a recent interview with "The Standard," she explained her outburst of generosity as a desire to create a buzz.
“I wanted to give him an amount that would create a buzz and that everyone would talk about.”
“A friend told me she would like me to meet Wally and participate in his next event, which usually takes place around Christmas time. She asked me to be the queen of the evening. I was attracted to the idea and started preparing everything,” she begins.
“I already knew how much I was going to give Wally. I already knew how I was going to do it. I wanted it to be unforgettable. I didn’t want it to be unique. I wanted to give him an amount that would create a buzz and that everyone would talk about. And something that no one had ever done in Gambia….So I asked Alieu Sall, a very good friend, to find me some of the loudest griots in the country so that I could attend the event with them and register. There were about six of them and I gave them between 10,000 (77,900 FCFA) and 15,000 Dalasis (116,953 FCFA) each. I also invited my cousins and bought two other tables for 100,000 Dalasis (779,000 FCFA). So I spent almost a million Dalasis that evening,” the Gambian woman recounted.
Wally Seck, who was holding his concert that evening, reportedly received "300,000 Dalasis (2,339,000 FCFA)".
She reportedly bought a 395,000 dalasis necklace from the artist's wife
“The next day we were supposed to have dinner together, but there were so many people that I went to visit him and asked him why he was giving out the money I had given him, because I had seen him give almost 60,000 Dalasis to other people on stage. So I told him I wanted to give him the money for himself. That day I gave him 50,000 Dalasis (389,000 FCFA),” said Nenneh Cheyassim Secka-Kebe.
She also reportedly bought a 395,000 Dalasis (3,000,000 FCFA) necklace for the artist's wife. The least we can say is that she achieved her goal, which was to create a buzz.
"I wanted noise," she confided to the Standard, without false modesty. She added: "If I had to do it again, I would probably give him (Wally Seck) more money."
Daughter of former Gambian Justice Minister Pap Ousman Cheyassim Secka
It is worth noting that Nenneh Cheyassim Secka-Kebe is the eldest daughter of the famous Gambian lawyer Pap Ousman Cheyassim Secka, former Attorney General of the country and former Minister of Justice. She was born in the United States, where her father had gone to study.
The Gambian holds a master's degree in business administration and marketing. She also holds a nursing degree. After working for a long time in the United States, she returned to her home country to pursue philanthropy.
“It allowed me to retire earlier than planned…”
“I thought I would work in the United States until I was 60 or 65, then retire and come back, but when my sister and I started our business 16 years ago, it became really successful. This allowed me to retire earlier than expected… We have a foundation. My lawyer takes care of everything, but it takes a lot of time. In the meantime, I take care of donations. My goal is to donate at least one million Dalasis a year,” she said.
